SUMMARY:Get Hounslow Reading – Contingent Talk with Books – Nursery/EYs Leaders
DESCRIPTION:A Reading-for-Pleasure Project for HEP Primary Schools\nPlease sign up for an Introduction to Contingent Talk with Books \nThis session will take place online with Christine Lovett & Kathryn Sikora\, our Contingent talk expert ambassadors. In this introduction to Contingent talk\, Nursery and Early Years Leaders will learn about the importance of child-led book talk. They will identify teachers and/or practitioners\, in their EYs team\, who will participate in the training from Autumn 2024. \nYou will also discuss the best approach to delivering the training in 2024/25 – online/in-person. \nHere are a few more details. \nWhat is it?\n\n10 minutes – once a week ‘Contingent talk with a book’ sessions with a trained adult.\nA simple child- centred approach to language learning through talk contingent on the child’s interest based around a book chosen by the child.\nAt least a term’s commitment to providing ‘Contingent talk with a book’ to each child chosen for the programme.\nIt will also be an opportunity to identify colleagues who will be involved in the training sessions.\n\nImpact:\n\nShared reading has a positive impact in children’s language development.\nDialogic reading styles are more effective at boosting children’s language development than a simple\, storytelling narrative style.\nInterventions based on dialogic reading styles have a positive impact on children’s expressive vocabulary.\n\nFor more information\, contact n.standing@hounsloweducationpartnership.co.uk

SUMMARY:Powerful Storytelling in the History Classroom – Primary school booking
DESCRIPTION:Led by Steve Mastin\, experienced History and senior curriculum specialist across primary and secondary schools\nDate\, time and venue:\nTuesday the 25th of June\, 4.30-6pm \nBolder Academy\, MacFarlane Lane\, Isleworth \nAimed at: \nPrimary History Leads (& Secondary Subject Networks) \nBooking deadline: \nTuesday 4th June\, one booking per school. We will offer spare places if available after deadline. \nWorkshop summary: \nStories can sometimes be seen as frivolous\, superficial\, or a luxury in an already crowded lesson\, short on time. The power of a well-told story for world building and knowledge acquisition should not be underestimated. When a story is told well\, a pupil is in a heightened state of attention\, anticipating what might happen\, and fixed on the teacher’s next utterance. Why do well-crafted stories matter so much in history teaching? Through several periods of world history from the National Curriculum\, we will consider: \n\nWhy stories are crucial to a history lesson’s journey and pupil understanding\nWhat factors make a story powerful\nHow to build storytelling into our curriculum planning\n\nFor those natural storytellers in the history classroom\, come and feel justified. For those who find storytelling does not come easily\, come and learn how to become a more effective storyteller.
